I am very pleased to welcome everyone to the 23rd edition of the European Throwing Cup which, once again, will be staged here in Leiria.
This is the second of three European Throwing Cups which will be staged here in consecutive years as we will also return her in 12 months’ time.
It is also the fifth time in less than a decade that this city will stage the European Throwing Cup, with it having previously taken place in Leiria in 2014, 2015, 2018 and last year.
This fact alone shows a fantastic level of enthusiasm and commitment for our great sport and I would like to thank everyone involved for their unstinting support.
Last year, despite sometimes challenging weather conditions, we saw many of Europe’s top throwers in action, several of who went on to win world and European titles or medals in the summer, and there were many excellent performances as well, including championship and personal bests.
Consequently, I am sure this year’s event will once again be a prelude to some great results from European throwers during the rest of the year and act as an early season form chart showing who will be among the athletes to watch in 2023.
From the Cup’s relatively modest beginnings in 2001, this event has become established itself as a hugely important competition for our continent’s throwers.
Many of the top throwers in Europe – and given our continent’s traditional strength in the shot put, discus, hammer and javelin, I can say the top throwers in the world – now have the Cup annually as an important date on their calendar.
The Cup has become an attractive early season showcase for the continent’s top exponents in the four throwing disciplines who want to test their mettle and results in the past have shown that Leiria is a place where they want to do it.
I would like to take this opportunity once again to offer my sincere thanks to the Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo – the Portuguese athletics federation – and the local authorities in Leiria for their continuing hospitality and commitment to our sport and European Athletics. It is always a joy, as we have done on many occasions, to return to this country and this city.
European Athletics are also very grateful to all the officials and volunteers with the Local Organising Committee for all their hard work and commitment, and I wish everyone an enjoyable and successful weekend.
