Welcome Message from the President of European Athletics

I am very pleased to welcome everyone to the 21st edition of European Throwing Cup.

As most people will know, this competition was scheduled to take place here 12 months ago but had to be cancelled at short notice owing to the prevailing situation in Portugal at that time with respect to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, I am happy that Leiria have reaffirmed their commitment and enthusiasm in continuing to be the Cup hosts and, on behalf of European Athletics, we are very happy to return here.

This will be the fourth time in less than a decade that this city will stage the European Throwing Cup, with it having previously taken place in Leiria in 2014, 2015 and then in 2018.

European Athletics originally awarded the European Throwing Cup to Leiria again in March 2019 barely 12 months after the last occasion it had been staged in this marvellous city and the decision was an easy one considering the excellent facilities and their previous organisational experience at staging the Cup.

Our confidence in the ability of Leiria and the Portuguese athletics federation to successfully stage this competition can be seen by the fact that the Cup will also return here in 2023 and 2024, in keeping with our original agreement for Leiria to stage this competition for three consecutive years.

From the Cup’s relatively modest beginnings in 2001, it has become established itself as a hugely important competition.

Many of the top throwers in Europe – and given our continent’s traditional strength in the shot put, discus, hammer and javelin, I can say top throwers in the world – have the Cup as an important date on their calendar and, writing this welcome message a little before the entries are known, I would expect a number of last year’s Olympic medallists to be in action here.

The Cup has become an attractive early season showcase for the continent’s top exponents in the four throwing disciplines who want to test their mettle and results in the past have shown that Leiria is a place where they want to do it.

I would like to take this opportunity to offer my sincere thanks to the Federação Portuguesa de Atletismo – the Portuguese athletics federation – and the local authorities in Leiria for their warm welcome and unstinting support for our sport and European Athletics.

European Athletics are also very grateful to all the officials and volunteers with the Local Organising Committee for all their hard work and commitment, and I wish everyone an enjoyable and successful weekend.

Dobromir Karamarinov
European Athletics President

Sports Councilor of Leiria Municipality

The city of Leiria has been chosen as European City of Sport in 2022. It is with enormous enthusiasm, ambition and responsibility that we take on this opportunity to raise the profile of Sport within Our municipality.

Over recent years, Leiria has invested in Sport as a catalyst to achieve territorial cohesion, as well as to promote good health and well-being amongst the community - and this compromise has only consolidated our vision.

The level of municipal investment in sports programmes and policies has multiplied, leading to the people of Leiria - os leirienses - to take up sports more regularly.

Community and volunteering engagement is an extremely important driving force within the 187 local associations which have Sport as part of their mission values; 94 of those offer regular sports activities, and 67 participate in a range of official sports competitions.

For many years, Juventude Vidigalense has organised several events of international standard, and hosting this type of competition is part of their essence as a sports club. The Municipality of Leiria prides itself for being able to support and to host these events because of the recognition and promotion these bring to our region.

The Municipality of Leiria will always stand together with Juventude Vidigalense in a path leading us to take on new and bigger challenges which will project Leiria further into the Athletics World Stage.

Carlos Palheira
Sports Councilor of Leiria Municipality

President of the Local Organising Committee

Leiria welcomes you!

Over 30 years of existence, many were the highlights of the history of Juventude Vidigalense. Among the collective and individual sports' results, there is no doubt that the organization of international competitions is assumed as an important reason for pride.

After seven editions of the European Champion Clubs Cup (Under-20 - Group B) and last September Group A and B, two editions of the European Champion Clubs Cup (Senior - Group B) and after three European Throwing Cups, it is time to host the next three years of the European Throwing Cup in Leiria. It is an honour and a challenge to welcome the best European throwers in our city, showing the world our sports facilities and making everyone feel “the well-known” Portuguese hospitality.

We are grateful to our organizational partners - the City of Leiria and the Portuguese Athletics Federation - as well as all the supporters and sponsors who make this moment possible.

We hope all conditions meet to achieve great results and to make this competition a fabulous event to promote athletics and the Olympic spirit.

To all of you, good luck ... and be very happy in Leiria!

Tânia Pinto
President of the Local Organising Committee

Leiria was originated at the hill of its castle, having its original settlement within its walls, and later growing down to the banks of the Lis river. Today this is a modern city, with a rehabilitated public space, which possesses a very characteristic way of urban living, both during the day or at night. At the city’s historical centre, hundreds of people of all ages gather to socialize, this being a privileged stage to play, talk, listen to music or dance.

The built patrimony has the castle as its ex-libris and also integrates a great number of churches and Art Nouveau buildings.

Leiria has a very rich landscape and environmental patrimony, with unique natural beauty, such as the Leiria Pine Tree Forest, the Lapedo Valley, a place of worldwide archaeological importance since the discovery of the Lapedo Child burial site, the Ervedeira Lagoon, the Pedrógão Beach and the Monte Real Spa. Another great richness of Leiria is its gastronomy, dominated by the scents and flavours of the sea that contrast with those typical of the mountains, which can be appreciated at its countrywide known restaurants.

Visiting Leiria is taking a tour around a fascinating city, full of treasures which remember historical people and places, with a landscape dominated by the hill of the castle. Visiting Leiria is to appreciate a city geometry characterized by the course from the hill of the castle to the Lis river banks, by its squares and streets from the 14th Century, where the past and present coexist.

One can end the day trying the delicacies of the wellknown restaurants of Marrazes and making the most of the different places that create the city’s vibrant nightlife.

During your stay in Leiria, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy the city’s cultural program provided, among others, by the Bank of Portugal’s building art gallery and by the José Lúcio da Silva and Miguel Franco theatres.

Around the municipality of Leiria there are many other places worth a visit, given the touristic attractions they hold, such as the monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaça, both of them elected by UNESCO as World Heritage sites, the beaches of S. Pedro de Moel, Vieira de Leiria and Nazaré, the village of Óbidos and the Sanctuary of Fátima, among others.
